Douglas Holster - My Grand-father

My grand-father passed away before I had chance to meet him. Luckily my mom has a fantastic memory, and was able to pass along stories - along with the name of some people he worked with. Back in 2008 I had an opportunity to visit EHDD located in San Francisco. I learned some cool facts: about my grand-father, projects he worked on, people he worked with, and his passion for design. This was a list of projects included in the published book Appropriate: The Houses of Joseph Esherick, wow! Thanks again to EHDD for taking the time to sit & talk, much appreciated!

So after almost 1 year of unemployment... I've started working for a great non-profit organization! If interested shoot an email my way I can update you more on that. I'll leave you with a small fact, this non-profit is another passion of mine.

Other then that I recently finished with my Basic Skills Construction Management Certification through the Santa Rosa Junior College. I'll still be continuing my education at the SRJC in the Fall of 2010. After a brief summit with engineers (ha-ha), I've decided to return to Architecture. One of my true loves and passions.

I also recently had my first art show. A little different from the architectural design side, but still fun! Check that out here. As well as enjoying more photography. Which can be found here.

Recent Happenings: Summer 2009

Last week I had the opportunity to attend a round-table discussion at the office of Jennings Ackerley Architecture, located right near the beautiful AT&T Park in San Francisco. I would like to extend a huge thanks to Mr. Ackerley and his staff for providing this opportunity to myself and others during these hard times.

During this lunch time meeting (thanks again for the fantastic lunch Charles!), around 20+ of us gathered in the main conference room to discuss the current economy and how everyone was doing. The group ranged from licensed architects; like Mr. Ackerley, recent graduates, an interior designer (I didn't forget you Rashad), others soon going for architectural license, and even some other students/unemployed workers like myself.

This was not a mass interview. But instead a chance for others to gather together to discuss possible design competitions, state bid proposals, and other ways to possibly build ones resume. I thought this was a wonderful opportunity and look forward to returning to office in the upcoming weeks. I look forward to the possible design competitions I hope to be involved with, but more importantly I see this is a great option to further my knowledge in the field of architecture and continue towards pursuing my degree in the near future.

While applying for jobs through craigslist, one potential employer proposed a different idea compared to the rest. The employer had asked that you submit a 3 sentence about yourself. Or perhaps a short poem, if you felt so inclined. I decided to go with second. Here was my shot at it:
